Korea – Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have unveiled a cutting-edge technology that treats colon cancer by converting malignant cells into a state resembling normal colon cells.

This innovative approach offers an alternative to traditional therapies, which often come with severe side effects and risks of recurrence.

Unlike conventional cancer treatments that aim to destroy cancer cells, the new method focuses on reprogramming them. The Korean research team, led by Professor Kwang-Hyun Cho from KAIST’s Department of Bio and Brain Engineering, has discovered how to induce cancer cells to revert to a near-normal state without harming the patient.

Understanding the Science

The team based their research on the process of oncogenesis—the transformation of normal cells into cancerous ones. During this process, cells regress along their differentiation trajectory, which is the path cells follow to mature and specialise.

Using this insight, the researchers developed a “digital twin” of the gene network that governs cell differentiation. Through advanced simulation analysis, they identified specific molecular “master switches” capable of reversing the transformation of colon cancer cells.

When applied in laboratory and animal studies, these master switches successfully reverted cancer cells to a normal-like state. The results were confirmed through extensive molecular and cellular experiments, highlighting the potential of this groundbreaking technology.

Redefining Cancer Therapy

Professor Cho emphasised the significance of the discovery, stating:
“The fact that cancer cells can be converted back to normal cells is an astonishing phenomenon. This study proves that such reversion can be systematically induced.”

The research introduces a new paradigm in cancer treatment, termed “reversible cancer therapy.” By systematically analysing cell differentiation pathways, the team identified precise molecular targets for inducing cancer cell reversion. This approach addresses critical challenges such as side effects and resistance often observed with existing treatments.

The findings hold immense promise not only for colon cancer treatment but also for other cancer types. As research progresses, this novel therapy could revolutionise cancer treatment worldwide.
