Chinese Court Sentences 62-Year-Old Man to Death for Driving Into a Crowd, Killing 35 and Injuring 43 in a Shocking Act of Revenge Over Divorce Dispute
A Chinese court has sentenced Fan Weiqiu to death for a shocking attack that killed 35 people and injured 43 others after he deliberately drove into a crowd in Zhuhai last month.
The court in southern China ruled on Friday that Fan, 62, carried out the attack to vent his anger over a bitter divorce settlement. The victims were exercising at a sports center when the tragedy struck. Fan pleaded guilty to
“endangering public safety by dangerous means,”
according to a court statement.
“Cruel and Vile Crime”
The court described Fan’s actions as “extremely despicable,” highlighting the cruelty of his methods and the devastating social harm caused. Authorities also emphasized the need for swift justice in light of the severe consequences of the attack.
This incident was among a series of violent attacks in China in late October and November, prompting Chinese President Xi Jinping to call on local governments to address potential triggers for such extreme acts, from marital disputes to financial grievances.
Rapid Sentencing Amid a Wave of Attacks
Fan’s sentencing came just weeks after another court in Hunan province handed a suspended death sentence to a man who injured 30 people by driving into a group of students and parents. Unlike Fan’s case, the Hunan driver’s sentence may be commuted to life in prison after two years.
These incidents are part of a troubling trend of “revenge on society” crimes, where attackers target innocent people in acts of frustration or anger over personal issues.
Tight Control Over Information
Chinese authorities have heavily censored details of such incidents, including eyewitness accounts and videos posted on social media. The death toll from the Zhuhai attack wasn’t confirmed until a day later, and police restricted access to the crime scene, with the public leaving flowers at a nearby square to mourn the victims.
Fan was reportedly found in his vehicle attempting to stab himself with a knife after the attack. His actions, described as premeditated and intentional, have left the nation grappling with the implications of these violent outbursts.
As the country reflects on these tragedies, local leaders are under pressure to address disputes and grievances before they escalate into violence.
