Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asked Beijing to ‘open up’ on pandemic’s origin saying the US believes it came from Wuhan lab.
US intelligence and national security officials say the United States government thinks that the novel coronavirus was mutated in a Chinese lab and may not originated from a market as claimed by China, according to multiple sources.
US, however, does not believe the virus was associated with bioweapons research, and officials noted that the intelligence community is also exploring a range of other theories regarding the origination of the virus, as would typically be the case for high-profile incidents, according to an intelligence source.
“we know this virus originated in Wuhan, China,” and noted that the Institute of Virology was only a handful of miles from the market, where people first came down with the disease.
“We really need the Chinese government to open up” and help explain “exactly how this virus spread”, Secretary of state, Mike Pompeo told Fox News Channel on the issue.
“The Chinese government needs to come clean,” he said.
Joint Chief of Staff Chairman Mark Milley acknowledged this week that US intelligence is taking “a hard look” at the question of whether the novel coronavirus originated in a lab.”I would just say, at this point, it’s inconclusive although the weight of evidence seems to indicate natural (origin). But we don’t know for certain,” Milley told reporters on Tuesday.
Asked about the intelligence, which was first reported by Yahoo and Fox News, President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the US is “doing a very thorough examination of this horrible situation that happened” but refused to discuss what he had been told about the findings.
The US also accused the World Health Organization of conceding early information about the virus spread. President Trump halted US funding for WHO saying that WHO is China-centric in handling the pandemic.
At least 136,000 people around the world have now died from the disease, with almost 31,000 in the US alone. More than two million people have been diagnosed with the virus, while at least half a million have recovered.
