Pet Pit Bull Accidentally Shoots Sleeping Dog Owner in Memphis
In an unusual incident in Memphis, Tennessee, a man was wounded by his pet dog early Monday morning when the animal inadvertently discharged a loaded firearm. The man, who was asleep beside his partner, sustained a minor injury—a graze to his left thigh—which required medical attention at a hospital.
According to a police report, the one-year-old pit bull named Oreo accidentally pulled the trigger of the firearm after getting its paw caught in the trigger guard. The report, which classified the event as an “accidental injury,” did not provide details about the specific type of gun involved.
While gun-related incidents are prevalent in the United States, cases involving pets inadvertently shooting their owners remain exceptionally rare. A similar tragic event occurred two years prior when a German shepherd fatally shot a 30-year-old man in Kansas by stepping on a hunting rifle. Additionally, in 2018, a 51-year-old man in Iowa was shot in the leg by his pit bull-Labrador mix.
Local news outlet Fox 13 Memphis reported comments from the girlfriend of the Tennessee victim, who remained unnamed. She recounted that she was asleep when the shot rang out, asserting, “The dog is playful and jumps around, and it just went off.” She emphasized the importance of firearm safety, advising, “Keep the safety on or use a trigger lock.”
