The German government has introduced the ‘Opportunity Card‘, a residence permit allowing skilled individuals from outside the EU to seek employment in Germany. Nigeria is listed as a country of residence for applicants on the portal.
The Opportunity Card is valid for up to one year and can be extended if applicants find qualified employment. To apply, proof of recognized professional qualifications and financial support (at least €1,027 per month) are required.
Eligibility includes a recognized degree or two years of training, German language skills (A1) or English language skills (B2), and sufficient financial means.
Nigerian applicants must apply for a visa through Germany’s diplomatic mission in Nigeria, depending on their residence district.
This initiative reflects a global trend of countries seeking expertise, with a significant increase in Nigerian healthcare workers migrating to the UK, Canada, and the US.
