In a BBC Sounds podcast, Witness History, Ekkachai reflected on their achievement and their time together.

“A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience”

“I am very proud. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,”

he told host Megan Jones.

“We spent a long time together, and I’m trying to remember the good memories and that we did this together.”

The couple initially set the record in 2011 with a 46-hour, 24-minute kiss, beating the previous record of 32 hours and seven minutes. They hadn’t planned to compete but were enticed by the prize—50,000 Thai Baht (£1,200 at the time) and a diamond ring.

Despite the grueling conditions, contestants had to remain standing, stay awake, and keep their lips locked at all times, they persevered. Ekkachai recalled nearly fainting, with spectators handing him an inhaler for support.

Training for the Ultimate Kiss

Their record was briefly broken in 2012 by two Thai men, Nonthawat Charoenkaesornsin and Thanakorn Sitthiamthong, who kissed for 50 hours, 25 minutes. Determined to reclaim their title, Ekkachai and Laksana trained intensely and returned in 2013 with renewed focus.

With a prize of 100,000 Thai Baht (£2,350) and two diamond rings at stake, they endured exhaustion by standing like statues, tapping each other on the head to stay awake. When their final competitors gave up, they secured their place in history with a record of 58 hours, 35 minutes, and 58 seconds.

A Record That Will Never Be Broken

Although their marriage has come to an end, their extraordinary feat remains unmatched.
