Lalita Kayi, a 50-year-old American woman, was discovered emaciated and chained to a tree in a remote forest in Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra, India.
Shepherds heard her cries for help and alerted local authorities, who rescued her by sawing off the chain.
Lalita Kayi was initially treated at a local hospital and later moved to a psychiatric facility in Ratnagiri for further care. According to doctors, her physical health has stabilized, though she remains under treatment.
In a statement to the police, Kayi alleged that her husband had abandoned her in the forest, leaving her without food or water. The Indian police are currently searching for her husband, identified in some reports as Satish, in Tamil Nadu based on the information provided by Kayi.
Kayi was found with a copy of her passport, an Aadhaar card, a mobile phone, a tablet, and 31,000 rupees ($370). These items suggest that theft was not a motive for her ordeal.
Despite her claims of having been denied food and water for 40 days and being injected with a drug that locked her jaw, authorities have yet to confirm these details, questioning the feasibility of surviving such conditions, according to BBC News report.
The US embassy in Delhi has been involved in the case but has declined to comment due to privacy regulations. The investigation continues, with police examining the electronic devices found with Kayi for additional clues.
