Former Polish President Lech Walesa Calls Trump’s Potential Re-election a “Global Threat”
Polish democracy icon and former president Lech Walesa has voiced his concerns over the potential reelection of Donald Trump in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, calling it a global “misfortune.”
In a brief Facebook post on Sunday, the 81-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate expressed his views on the stakes of the U.S. election, saying that while he typically avoids commenting on other countries’ internal politics, this situation is “too important for the world.”
“I deeply believe that Americans will vote responsibly,” Walesa wrote. “In my opinion, I am completely convinced that Trump’s election WOULD BE A MISFORTUNE FOR THE U.S. AND THE WORLD,” he added, emphasizing his concern in capital letters.
Walesa did not elaborate further on his reasons for this view.
Walesa, a key figure in Poland’s struggle for democracy, led the Solidarity movement, which played a critical role in the fall of communism in the 1980s. He served as Poland’s president from 1990 to 1995 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 for his efforts in promoting workers’ rights and freedom under Soviet-backed rule.
