Prince Yormie Johnson, known for his brutal role in Liberia’s civil war and subsequent political career, dies at 72, marking the end of a controversial era in the nation’s history.

Prince Yormie Johnson, the notorious Liberian warlord who later became a senator, has died at the age of 72. His passing was confirmed on November 28, 2024, by officials from his political party and the Liberian Senate. Johnson reportedly collapsed at his residence and was pronounced dead at the Hope for Women Health Center in Paynesville, a suburb of Monrovia.

Johnson rose to infamy during Liberia’s devastating civil wars, which spanned from 1989 to 2003 and claimed the lives of approximately 250,000 people. As a key figure in the conflict, he gained global notoriety for his brutal tactics.

One of the most horrifying incidents tied to Johnson was the 1990 torture and execution of then-President Samuel Doe, an event captured on video. In the footage, Johnson is seen drinking beer as his forces carried out the gruesome act, a moment that epitomized the barbarity of the war.

Despite being labeled one of the “most notorious perpetrators” of war crimes by Liberia’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Johnson managed to transition into politics. In 2006, he was elected senator representing Nimba County, where he wielded considerable influence until his death.

Final Days and Cause of Death

Reports indicate that Johnson collapsed in his bathroom before being rushed to the hospital. He had been battling health issues, including high blood pressure, prior to his death. His sudden passing closes a controversial chapter in Liberia’s history, marked by both political maneuvering and a violent past.

From Warlord to Politician

After the war, Johnson’s reinvention as a political leader surprised many. He maintained strong support in Nimba County, where he was seen by some as a protector of the region’s interests. His political journey was marked by his self-styled role as a “Godfather” figure, blending charisma with an authoritarian streak.

While his influence waned in recent years, Johnson remained active in national politics, frequently making headlines for his involvement in contentious political debates and his vocal support of candidates in Liberia’s presidential elections.
