Swimmer Luana Alonso Removed from Olympic Village for Creating ‘Inappropriate’ Atmosphere says Larissa Schaerer
Luana Alonso, a Paraguayan swimmer who recently announced her retirement from the sport, has been removed from the Olympic Village at the Paris Games due to allegations of creating an “inappropriate atmosphere”. The 20-year-old athlete, who failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the 100-meter freestyle, has vehemently denied the claims and criticized what she describes as “false information.”
Alonso’s unexpected departure from the Olympic Village has been a topic of controversy. According to Larissa Schaerer, a former Paraguayan Olympic tennis player, Alonso’s presence was deemed disruptive:
“Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay. We thank her for proceeding as instructed, as it was of her own free will that she did not spend the night in the Athletes’ Village.”

In response, Alonso took to Instagram, where she has over half a million followers, to refute these claims.
“I just wanted to clarify that I was never kicked out or expelled from anywhere, please stop spreading false information. I don’t want to make any statement but I’m not going to let lies affect me either.”

The Olympic Village, which houses around 14,250 athletes across three sites in Paris: Saint-Denis, Saint-Ouen, and L’Île-Saint-Denis provides extensive amenities, including up to 60,000 meals daily and a 24-hour medical clinic. Athletes have the option to stay in or out of the village.
Alonso, who finished sixth in the 100m butterfly heat and narrowly missed semi-final qualification, announced her retirement from competitive swimming shortly after her race. Despite her decision to retire, she remained in Paris until her removal.
Reflecting on her swimming career, Alonso expressed gratitude in her farewell message:
“Swimming: thank you for allowing me to dream, you taught me to fight, to try, perseverance, sacrifice, discipline and many more. I gave you part of my life and I don’t change it for anything in the world because I lived the best experiences of my life, you gave me thousands of joys, friends from other countries that I will always carry in my heart, unique opportunities. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you soon.”
