Monkey Shuts Down Power nationwide in Sri Lanka
Nationwide Power Outage in Sri Lanka Triggered by Monkey Incident

In an unexpected turn of events, a monkey’s intrusion into an electrical grid substation resulted in a nationwide power outage in Sri Lanka on Sunday. Government officials reported that the blackout commenced around 11:30 a.m. local time (0600 GMT), affecting the entire island. After three hours, many areas still lacked electricity.

Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody informed reporters that the mishap occurred in a suburb south of Colombo, where the monkey came into contact with a grid transformer, causing a system imbalance. While some regions experienced a restoration of power, officials were uncertain about the timeline for a complete recovery.

“Engineers are on-site working diligently to restore services at the earliest opportunity,” Jayakody stated.

This power disruption adds to the ongoing energy issues Sri Lanka has faced in recent years. In the summer of 2022, the country dealt with extensive blackouts due to an economic crisis, which resulted in severe fuel shortages. At the height of that crisis, thermal power plants had to ration electricity, with outages stretching up to 13 hours daily.
