In a dramatic turn of events, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, 76, and her sister reportedly took a military helicopter to India’s eastern state of West Bengal, according to media reports.
Contradictory reports suggest she may have been headed to India’s northeastern state of Tripura.
Celebrations erupted as thousands stormed her official residence, shouting slogans, pumping fists, and displaying victory signs. Thousands more took to the streets of Dhaka to celebrate the end of Hasina’s 15-year tenure.
In a nationwide address, Bangladesh’s army chief, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, assured the public of a swift resolution to the crisis “by tonight.” He stated his intention to discuss the formation of an interim government with the president and pledged that the military would stand down.
General Zaman also promised a thorough investigation into the deadly crackdowns that have sparked widespread outrage, with nearly 300 people killed in protests over the past month.
Hasina’s resignation followed calls from student activists for a mass march on Dhaka on Monday, defying a nationwide curfew to demand her departure.
