A move that has shaken Thailand’s political landscape, the Constitutional Thai Court has ordered the dissolution of the popular Move Forward party. This ruling, announced on Wednesday, follows the party’s campaign to amend Thailand’s strict lèse-majesté law, which protects the monarchy from defamation.
The decision marks a significant setback for the Move Forward party, which won the 2023 general election with a progressive platform that challenged traditional power structures. The court’s ruling comes just six months after it previously mandated that Move Forward abandon its efforts to reform the controversial law, citing concerns about undermining the monarchy’s role in Thailand’s governance.
Despite the party’s dissolution, the impact may be limited. While the court has banned Move Forward’s 11 current and former executives from politics for the next decade, its 143 lawmakers are expected to regroup under a new party banner. This maneuver echoes a similar situation in 2020 when Move Forward’s predecessor, Future Forward, was disbanded over a campaign funding violation.
If most lawmakers consolidate into a single new party, it could become the largest in parliament, continuing to push for its progressive agenda, which includes military reform and tackling business monopolies. This agenda has been a point of contention, leading to concerted efforts by rivals to prevent Move Forward from forming a government.
The timing of this ruling is particularly critical as Thailand faces political uncertainty. Cracks are appearing in the uneasy truce between the royalist establishment and the populist ruling party, Pheu Thai. The Constitutional Court is also set to rule next week on a case brought by 40 conservative former senators seeking the dismissal of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. The challenge centers on Thavisin’s appointment of a controversial lawyer to his cabinet. The outcome of this case could further destabilize Thailand’s political landscape, impacting financial markets and potentially triggering a major reshuffle in the governing coalition.
As Thailand navigates these turbulent waters, the dissolution of Move Forward adds a new layer of complexity to an already volatile political environment.
