U.K Government to Issue 45,000 Seasonal Worker Visas in 2025 to Boost Food Production and Address Workforce Shortages in The Agricultural Sector

In a strategic move to tackle workforce shortages, the UK government has announced that it will issue 45,000 Seasonal Worker visas in 2025. This initiative aims to support key areas in the country’s food production sectors, particularly horticulture and poultry.

Of the total visas, 43,000 will be allocated to the horticulture industry for roles like fruit picking, vegetable harvesting, and flower cultivation. Meanwhile, 2,000 visas will be designated for the poultry sector, assisting with processing tasks during the October to December period.

This annual visa allocation forms part of a larger government plan to secure labor for peak agricultural seasons, helping businesses meet heightened demand.

Eligibility Requirements for Seasonal Worker Visa Applicants

To qualify for a Seasonal Worker visa, applicants must meet specific requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Obtain valid sponsorship from a licensed UK employer
  • Fulfill job-related health and safety standards

In addition, applicants must show proof of sufficient funds for their stay and carry health insurance. Seasonal workers are required to leave the UK once their employment ends and are restricted from changing visa types during their stay.

Available Roles and Application Process

The Seasonal Worker visa encompasses a range of roles within the horticulture and poultry sectors. Horticulture workers may engage in planting, pruning, weeding, harvesting, and packing. Poultry roles, on the other hand, focus on feeding, bird care, egg collection, and processing.

To apply, candidates must first secure sponsorship from a licensed UK employer. Once sponsored, applicants can complete their visa application through the UK government’s online immigration portal. Poultry applicants must submit their forms by November 15 each year, while horticulture roles are open for applications year-round.

Balancing Labor with Automation: The Future of UK Agriculture

The government’s plan for seasonal labor extends beyond short-term fixes. Significant investments are underway to enhance agricultural technology, including robotic harvesters, to gradually reduce dependency on foreign workers while boosting efficiency. These innovations are expected to reshape the future of agriculture, creating a more sustainable and tech-driven workforce model.

As part of these advancements, the UK government has committed up to £50 million for technology and automation in the sector, positioning the country for a future with a blend of seasonal labor and modern farming techniques.

Extended Seasonal Worker Visa Program: What You Need to Know

In May 2024, the UK extended the Seasonal Worker visa program until 2029. This five-year extension gives businesses a window to adopt advanced technologies and adapt to potential changes in workforce availability.
