Vice President Kashim Shettima officially launched the Light Up Nigeria, South East Initiative today in Enugu.
This initiative, part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda, aims to revamp the nation’s economy and ensure rapid industrialization.
During the launch, Senator Shettima commissioned the 181MW Geometric power plant in Aba, Abia State, signaling a significant step towards providing stable power supply to industrial clusters in the region.
The Geometric power plant project, a collaboration between the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited and its partners, is set to bolster Nigeria’s infrastructure framework and empower Nigerians, aligning with the economic policies of the Tinubu administration.
In his address titled “A Stable Light for a Steady Economy,” Senator Shettima emphasized the project’s importance in providing a solution to Nigeria’s power challenges, stating, “This intervention isn’t a ribbon-cutting charade. This is a calculated endeavor to re-engineer our economy.”
The launch in Enugu follows the successful initiation of the project in the South West at the Agbara Industrial Cluster in October 2023.
Senator Shettima highlighted the achievements in Agbara, including the completion of technical studies and the procurement of a new transformer, as evidence of the project’s viability.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State expressed gratitude for the initiative, recognizing its potential to drive economic growth and create jobs. He emphasized the importance of the project in reducing power costs for the productive sector and urged industrialists to take advantage of the opportunity.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State echoed similar sentiments, stressing the necessity of addressing the power sector’s challenges for economic progress. He called for collaborative efforts to find solutions, emphasizing the critical role of electricity in driving development.
The launch event was attended by dignitaries including former Senate President Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, former Governor of Imo State Senator Rochas Okorocha, and Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, among others.
The Light Up Nigeria, South East Initiative signifies a renewed commitment to addressing Nigeria’s power supply deficit and driving industrial revival in the region, laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth and development.
