The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Benneth Igweh, has ordered an urgent investigation into the death of a student at Veritas University in Abuja following reports of suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
Family members of the deceased student, identified as Joshua Èjuojo Daniel-Ejigbo, allege that he was stabbed five times before succumbing to his injuries. The tragic incident has prompted the FCT Command to launch a discreet investigation under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
According to a statement by the FCT Command’s Spokesman, SP Josephine Adeh, further details regarding the investigation will be communicated as developments unfold.
Initially, it was reported that Daniel-Ejigbo, a 100-level computer science student, had died while exercising at the campus gymnasium on Wednesday. However, subsequent examination revealed five stab wounds on his back and ribs, raising suspicions of foul play.
Sources within the university disclosed that Daniel-Ejigbo collapsed while exercising on Tuesday night, foaming at the mouth around 9 p.m. The university promptly notified his father of the incident, informing him of his son’s demise around 11 p.m. the same night.
Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, representing the family, expressed concerns over the suspicious circumstances surrounding the student’s death, citing possible foul play and gross negligence.
Family sources further alleged that they discovered the stab wounds on the deceased student’s back and ribs, indicating a violent altercation. The body was initially taken to Fatima Hospital, Mortuary, Bwari, before being transferred to the mortuary at the National Hospital in Abuja.
Upon closer examination, blood was reportedly observed coming out of the student’s mouth, prompting the family to alert the authorities. The Police were subsequently notified, leading to the launch of a formal investigation into the suspicious killing of the student.
As investigations continue, the Veritas University community remains in shock over the untimely demise of Joshua Èjuojo Daniel-Ejigbo, with calls for justice and transparency in the handling of the case.
