The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced a nationwide strike starting on Monday, June 3rd, 2024, due to the tripartite committee’s failure to reach an agreement on a new minimum wage.
The labour leaders, led by TUC President Festus Osifo, made the announcement at a joint news conference in Abuja on Friday, citing the expiration of their earlier request to the Federal Government to conclude negotiations for a new minimum wage by the end of May.
This decision comes after the organised labour had previously pulled out of negotiations and rejected two offers from the Federal Government, the latest being N60,000.
The strike action is expected to paralyze economic activities across the country, as workers from various sectors are expected to join the industrial action.
The labour unions are demanding a new minimum wage that reflects the current economic realities in the country, and have accused the Federal Government of foot-dragging in the negotiations.
The strike action is expected to continue until the Federal Government meets the demands of the labour unions.
