The Senate has directed its committees on Appropriation, Power, and Finance to probe the entire Mambilla Hydro Electric Power Project (MHEPP) contract transaction from 1999 to date.
The investigation aims to address concerns over the project’s delay and inability to come to fruition since its conception.
The resolution follows a motion sponsored by Senator Harun Manu, who highlighted the project’s potential benefits, including complementing the national grid, job creation, industrialization, and tourism potentials.
Former Deputy Speaker Babangida Nguroje commended the Senate for taking up the matter, expressing enthusiasm for the project’s potential to create over 55,000 jobs, improve the power crisis in Nigeria, and trigger local content beyond Taraba state.
The Mambilla Power Project, worth $5.792 billion, was signed in 2017 with a Chinese consortium to construct a 3,050 megawatts power project in Taraba state. The project has an agreed JV funding structure of 85% from the Chinese consortium and 15% from the Federal Government as counterpart funding.
Senators Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Sani Musa called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to revive the project as a legacy project of his administration, while former Senate President Ahmad Lawan also expressed support for the project’s actualization.
The investigation aims to ensure the project’s completion and address the legal impediments that have hindered its progress.
