‘Real Devil’ isn’t Salary – sani, Atiku Urge Reps to go Further, Cut Allowances

sani, Atiku Urges Reps to go Further, Cut Allowances

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has commended the House of Representatives for slashing their salaries, but he believes that the real issue lies in the excessive office running costs. In a recent social media post, Sani expressed his support for the symbolic gesture, stating that it is a step in the right direction. However, he emphasized that the problem runs deeper, citing the need to address the wasteful spending habits and prioritize essential expenses.

The PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, also echoed similar sentiments, describing the lawmakers’ sacrifice as a drop in the ocean. According to Atiku, the real issue lies in the allowances and benefits received by lawmakers and government officials, which he believes are inflated and unsustainable.

Atiku pointed out that despite the much-touted implementation of the Oronsaye Report, which aimed to streamline government expenses and reduce wastage, there has been little to no progress in addressing the issue. He argued that instead of targeting individual lawmakers’ salaries, there should be an across-the-board cut in government expenses to tackle the larger problem of excessive spending.

The former senator and presidential candidate both highlighted the need for more drastic measures to address the issue of wasteful spending in government. While acknowledging that reducing lawmakers’ salaries is a step in the right direction, they emphasized that it is merely a band-aid solution and that more comprehensive reforms are needed to tackle the root causes of government expenditure.
