The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate cases of electoral violence, bribery, and vote-buying during the 2023 general elections.

Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu delivered the judgment on July 18, 2024, in a case filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP). The court directed INEC to identify and prosecute suspected perpetrators and their sponsors, and to appoint independent counsel to investigate the electoral offences.

The judgment also mandates the swift prosecution of arrested offenders currently in the custody of law enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, EFCC, and ICPC.

The court acknowledged the significant impact of electoral violence on Nigeria’s democratic and economic development, and emphasized the need for credible elections and leaders.

SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, confirmed the court’s ruling, stressing the importance of holding accountable those responsible for electoral misconduct.
