Sergeant Cynthia Maurice of the Nigerian Airforce has made history as the first female professional golfer in the Nigerian military
Maurice’s achievement was confirmed following her success in the week-long Professional Examinations held from July 14 to July 20 at the HSD Golf Club in Bayelsa. These examinations, sanctioned by the Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria, included playing ability tests, as well as written and oral exams.
Emmanuel Odoh, Assistant Resident Head Professional at TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club, praised Maurice’s resilience and determination. He emphasized that her accomplishment has opened doors for other female golfers in the military and inspired young girls to pursue careers in sports.
“This milestone underscores the progress in promoting gender equality and diversity within the Nigerian military,” Odoh stated.
Maurice’s journey began just four years ago, driven by her inspiration from professional golfers. She started as a 36-handicap beginner and, through unwavering dedication, worked tirelessly to improve her skills and achieve professional status.
“Cynthia’s transformation from a beginner to a professional golfer is a remarkable feat. Her hard work, discipline, and courage have earned her accolades and respect,” Odoh said.
“Today, we celebrate Cynthia’s remarkable journey, her perseverance, and her refusal to accept anything less than excellence. Congratulations, Pro Cynthia Maurice,” he concluded.
