The Nigerian military has taken decisive action following the tragic death of Achimugu James Etubi, the hotel manager of Royal Damgrete in Umuahia, Abia State.

The military announced on Sunday that it has arrested personnel allegedly involved in the interrogation process that led to the hotel manager, Etubi’s death , and a preliminary investigation is underway to determine the actual cause of death.

Etubi’s death occurred amidst allegations of brutal torture by some personnel of the Nigerian Army, reportedly in connection with the drowning of a Nigerian Air Force cadet, identified as CDT Chidiebere, in the hotel’s swimming pool. According to reports, the cadet drowned on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, prompting an investigation by Operation UDO KA in Abia State.

In a statement signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Acting Director of Defence Information, the army expressed its commitment to ensuring that justice is served in the case. Gusau emphasized that if any military personnel is found culpable in the death of Etubi, they will face the full wrath of the law.

The statement provided a detailed account of the events leading up to the hotel manager, Etubi’s death. It explained that four staff members of the hotel were invited for interrogation by Operation UDO KA to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the cadet’s drowning. After questioning, the staff members were released unharmed and reportedly left for their destination without incident. However, the military later received information that one of the hotel workers complained of ill health and was rushed to the Federal Medical Center in Umuahia, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

While expressing condolences to Etubi’s family, Operation UDO KA reiterated its commitment to conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. The military organization assured the public that it operates within the ambit of the law and will not tolerate any wrongdoing by its personnel. It emphasized that all individuals involved in the interrogation process have been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing to uncover the truth behind Etubi’s death.

The statement concluded with a reassurance to Etubi’s family that justice will be served, and those responsible for his death will be held accountable. Operation UDO KA affirmed its dedication to upholding the principles of justice and transparency in its operations, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
