The National Assembly is deliberating on a bill that proposes an increase in Nigeria’s Value-Added Tax (VAT) from the current 7.5% to 10% by 2025.

The National Assembly has passed the National Minimum Wage Act 2019 (Amendment Bill), raising the minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.

The bill was transmitted by President Bola Tinubu and approved by both the Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The bill sailed through its second and third readings in both chambers, with the Senate passing it after a unanimous vote following clause consideration in the Committee of the Whole. The House of Representatives followed suit, mirroring the Senate’s actions.

President Tinubu is expected to sign the bill into law shortly, following an agreement reached between the government and the leadership of the Organised Labour last Thursday.

The new minimum wage comes after months of negotiations between labour leaders and the government, with labour initially demanding ₦250,000. However, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) accepted the President’s ₦70,000 offer, citing the reduction of the periodic review interval from five to three years.
