A powerful earthquake struck Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon late Monday, causing widespread panic and injuring at least 25 people.
The 4.8 magnitude quake, which was initially estimated at 5.46 magnitude, occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and had its epicenter east of Hama, Syria.
In Syria, residents fled into the streets in panic, with reports of a balcony collapse and ambulances treating people who had fainted.
The earthquake triggered memories of the devastating 2023 quake that killed over 50,000 people in Turkey and northern Syria.
In Lebanon, some residents initially mistook the earthquake for an airstrike, given the recent regional tensions and Israeli airstrikes over the past 10 months.
A 3.9 magnitude aftershock was reported less than an hour after the initial quake, according to Jordan’s state news agency.
The Syrian civil defense in northern opposition-held areas deployed teams to respond to potential emergencies but had not yet received any reports of damage.
Eyewitness Accounts
“I felt dizzy just like last time, but the fear was greater because I remembered the previous quake,” said Umm Hamzah, a resident of Damascus.
“My son was asleep, and I don’t know how I managed to grab him and get out of the house,” said Nasser Duyub, a local state employee in Salamiya.
