Edo State Governorship Election: 125,928 new PVCs collected in 5 days

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a remarkable 68.3% collection rate of newly printed Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) in Edo State, ahead of the September 21 governorship election.

According to INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, a total of 125,928 out of the 184,438 PVCs issued during the recent Continuous Voter Registration exercise have been collected.

This unprecedented collection rate is the highest recorded by INEC since the introduction of CVR for off-cycle governorship elections in 2015. The collection exercise took place across all 192 wards in Edo State between August 22 and August 26, with INEC officials working tirelessly to ensure a smooth process.

Olumekun revealed that the commission had carefully packaged all the PVCs by polling units, wards, and local government areas, making it easier for voters to collect their cards. The commission also produced a collection register, which provides details of voters whose cards are ready for collection and is available on its website.

Despite the impressive collection rate, INEC is still urging the remaining 58,510 voters to collect their PVCs from its local government area offices. The collection exercise will resume in these offices from Wednesday to September 8.

To emphasize the importance of direct collection, Olumekun reiterated INEC’s policy that no cards should be collected by proxy. Voters are advised to check the locations of INEC local government area offices on the commission’s website to ensure they can collect their PVCs at their convenience.

With this impressive record of PVC collection in Edo State, INEC is poised to deliver a successful governorship election on September 21.
