Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Nigeria Police Force to secure local government secretariats in Rivers State following violent attacks by aggrieved individuals over the outcome of Saturday’s local government council elections.
In a statement issued on Monday by Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed deep concern over reports of arson and explosions at several council secretariats across the oil-rich state. The attacks, reportedly carried out by hoodlums protesting the election results, have raised tensions in the region.
“President Tinubu has instructed law enforcement agencies to restore peace, law, and order, while ensuring the protection of public institutions from further vandalism,” Onanuga said. He added that the President emphasized the importance of safeguarding government facilities built with public funds.
The President called on all political stakeholders to refrain from inciting their supporters and to pursue peaceful means of resolving disputes. He stressed that violence and self-help have no place in a democratic society, noting that any grievances should be addressed through the judiciary.
“President Tinubu believes that the judiciary is the appropriate channel to resolve political disputes, and the outcome of this election should be no exception,” the statement concluded.
The directive comes in response to reports of unrest in several local government areas in Rivers State, where tensions have flared since the announcement of the election results. The President urged all parties involved to de-escalate the situation and allow law enforcement to carry out their duties in maintaining peace and order.
