Federal Government Launches ICT Training Initiative for 4,000 Nigerians

On Friday, the Federal Government announced a significant step towards enhancing digital literacy in Nigeria by initiating a training program designed to equip approximately 4,000 Nigerians with vital Information Communication Technology (ICT) and digital skills. This initiative is part of the Renewed Hope Employment Initiative (RHEI), aimed at tackling unemployment through skill development.

Speaking at the official launch of the RHEI at the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) Skills Acquisition Center in Kuduru, Bwari Area Council, Abuja, NDE Director General Honourable Silas Agara revealed that out of a total of 93,731 individuals benefiting from the program, 3,000 slots have been specifically allocated for people with special needs.

Agara shared that each of Nigeria’s states, along with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), will receive 81 slots for persons with special needs as part of the initiative. He emphasized that after completing their training, many beneficiaries will have the opportunity to transition into productive entrepreneurial ventures, as the program includes provisions for tools, equipment, and start-up capital. Additionally, the NDE is in ongoing discussions with lending institutions to provide support for other beneficiaries who may require further financial assistance.

“This employment initiative aims to engage a total of 93,731 unskilled and unemployed individuals across the nation,” Agara noted. He highlighted the program’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that at least 10 individuals from each of the 8,809 electoral wards in Nigeria are included. The initiative spans across a wide range of vocational skills development, small enterprise support, rural employment promotion, and special public works.

Agara reiterated that the program caters to various groups within the unskilled and unemployed demographics, including school leavers, dropouts, women, recent graduates, retirees, and individuals with special needs.

He affirmed, “After the training, many beneficiaries will be transitioned into productive ventures through the provision of essential tools and startup capital. For those whom we cannot resettle immediately, we will facilitate connections with financial institutions for additional support.”

The NDE Director General also expressed the agency’s commitment to leveraging modern technology in both the design and execution of the program. He announced, “Out of the 93,731 participants, 40,000 will receive training specifically focused on ICT and digital skills. This strategic decision aims to empower our youth with emerging skills to ensure their competitiveness on a global scale.”
