The controversy began following the release of a voice note by VeryDarkMan, in which Bobrisky claimed that his godfather, in collaboration with the Controller General of the NCS, arranged for him to serve his six-month sentence in a private apartment, rather than within the confines of the correctional facility.

Abuja, Nigeria – Social media influencer, Mr. Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, along with his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, have appeared before a joint committee of the National Assembly investigating corruption allegations against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS).

Following allegations made by notorious cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, who was previously convicted and sentenced to prison in April for naira abuse, an investigation has been launched.

Bobrisky alleged that officials from both agencies demanded bribes to facilitate his serving of his sentence in the VIP section of the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre, Lagos.

The controversy began following the release of a voice note by VeryDarkMan, in which Bobrisky claimed that his godfather, in collaboration with the Controller General of the NCS, arranged for him to serve his six-month sentence in a private apartment, rather than within the confines of the correctional facility.

In response to the allegations, the board of the Nigerian Correctional Service has suspended a senior officer, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, Deputy Controller of Corrections, In-Charge of Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, Abuja, for allegedly receiving money on behalf of an inmate. According to a memo issued by the board, the suspension was necessary to ensure a thorough investigation.

“The suspension is to allow proper investigation into the allegations against them, while assuring that the outcome would be made public once concluded,” said Sola Ahmed, spokesperson for the board.

The House of Representatives, during its session on Thursday, September 26, resolved to investigate the bribery allegations against the EFCC and NCS. The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Patrick Umoh, the representative of Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom State.

While addressing his colleagues, Umoh expressed concern over the allegations made by VeryDarkMan, which were widely circulated on social media and other platforms.

“The publication alleges that the EFCC dropped money laundering charges against Idris Okuneye upon collection of N15,000,000. It further claims that Bobrisky, upon his conviction for abuse and defacing of the naira, did not serve his sentence within the Nigerian Correctional Service but was lodged outside its confines,” Umoh stated.

He emphasized that the serious allegations against the EFCC and NCS, two critical law enforcement agencies in the country, should not be taken lightly as they could tarnish Nigeria’s image and portray it as a corrupt nation.

Following the adoption of the motion, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over the plenary session, referred the motion to the Committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions for further investigation.

The outcome of the investigation is expected to be disclosed in the coming weeks.
