Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, widely known as DJ Cuppy, is a multifaceted Nigerian DJ, producer, philanthropist, and entrepreneur who has made significant contributions to the world of music, business, and charity.
Her upbringing, educational achievements, and philanthropic initiatives have solidified her as a prominent figure in African entertainment and philanthropy.
DJ Cuppy’s educational journey is one of her most remarkable achievements, reflecting her commitment to continuous learning and growth. In 2014, she graduated from King’s College London with a degree in business and economics. Soon after, she moved to the United States, where she pursued a master’s degree in music business from New York University (NYU) in 2015. Her passion for understanding African history and society led her to further her education at the University of Oxford, where she graduated in 2022 with a degree in African Studies. Recently, she announced that she had completed her fourth academic pursuit with a master’s degree from the London School of Economics.
Fun fact: DJ Cuppy started her music career in London, where she became known for blending Afrobeats with global sounds. In 2014, she served as the resident DJ for the MTV Africa Music Awards in Durban. That same year, she launched her own music management and production company, Red Velvet Music Group, which is based in London. The DJ Cuppy has headlined various international events and festivals, solidifying her presence on the global stage.
Beyond her successful career in music, DJ Cuppy is one of the most dedicated philanthropist. In 2018, she launched the Cuppy Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at improving the lives of less privileged children and young people in Nigeria. One of her foundation’s most notable accomplishments came in November 2019 when it raised over N5 billion (about $13 million) for the “Save the Children” initiative. This partnership with Save the Children Nigeria aims to address critical issues affecting children, such as malnutrition and lack of education.
In 2021, DJ Cuppy was named an ambassador for the Lagos SDGs Youth Alliance, highlighting her commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Her dedication to social causes had earned her recognition on both national and international platforms.
The Cuppy Fund
Building on her passion for education and giving back to her community, DJ Cuppy recently launched the “Cuppy Fund” at New York University. This scholarship program is designed to provide financial support to African students studying at NYU, enabling them to pursue their academic ambitions with less financial burden. She took to Instagram on Wednesday September 18th, 2024 to unveil the Initiative, ‘Cuppy Fund’.
