Hilda Baci, a 27-year-old chef took the Nigerian online space by storm when videos of her four-day ‘cook-a-thon’ at Amore Gardens, Lekki, Lagos State, went viral as she attempts to clinch a Guinness World Record for longest cooking time.
Hilda Baci is on the verge to break the world’s longest cooking time record held by Lata Tondon who completed the task in 87 hours, 45 minutes, and 00 secs in Rewa, India in 2019.
The chef has exceeded 69 hours of cooking so far, as of the time of filing in this report.
Hilda announced in an Instagram post on April 2nd that she was going to make her five-year-long dream a reality. The event was scheduled to begin on April 28th but had to be shifted to May 11th at Amore Gardens, Lekki, Lagos to cater to the needs and requirements of the extra people who registered to be in attendance.
The Cook-a-thon is headline sponsored by GB Food, makers of Gino tomato paste, Ginomax and Bama. Other sponsors include Woodscope, Amore Gardens, Vendease, AfriGlobal, Uber, Arla Foods, CWAY, Filmhouse, ORIKI, and PowerOil.
Hilda’s world record attempt went viral online attracting the attention of the Nigerian political class. Taking to her Instagram live video on Sunday, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigerian president elect, commented, “IDAN doesn’t break, she breaks records. We’re rooting for you, Hilda.” as a show of support for the chef. Also on the list of her supporters was the governor of Lago state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who showed up at the venue to meet with Baci. He made this known on his Twitter page on Sunday.
The Governor wrote, “I showed up to support Chef Hilda Baci, in her quest to break the Guinness World Record @GWR for the longest time spent cooking by an individual. “Her dedication, passion for cooking as well as her desire to put our rich culture on the map by not only exhibiting our food but also the resilience, determination, energy and team spirit that has come to be known as the spirit of Lagos and indeed Nigeria is truly remarkable.”
“We are proud to have Hilda embarking on this journey in our state. I will continue to follow the updates and look forward to the final declaration.”
The vice president of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo also called in to cheer Hilda Baci. The video of the moment of the call was posted online on facebook.
Nigerians from all works of life have rallied support for Baci earning her an instant celebrity status.
