Tiwa Savage, often referred to as the “Queen of Afrobeats,” has been a dominant force in the Nigerian and global music scenes for over a decade. She gained prominence after signing with Mavin Records in 2012 and has since become an international icon, working with top artists such as Beyoncé, Wizkid, Brandy, and Sam Smith.
Lagos, Nigeria – Renowned Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Tiwa Savage has made it clear that she has no intention of signing upcoming artists, citing the challenges and pressures that come with managing musicians.
In an exclusive interview with Forbes Africa on Thursday, the award-winning Afrobeats star revealed that while many people have urged her to mentor and sign budding talents, she does not believe she is suited for such a responsibility. According to her, handling artists can be overwhelming, and she prefers to support them in other ways.
“Everyone always asks me, ‘When will you sign an artist?’ But honestly, I don’t think I have the gift for that because artists can be really stressful,” Savage stated. “I could be asleep and wake up to find my artist trending for something unexpected. Managing artists comes with a lot of pressure, and I don’t think I’m built for that.”
Rather than running a record label, the “Somebody’s Son” crooner is looking to create opportunities for emerging musicians through alternative means. She disclosed plans to establish a music academy where aspiring artists can refine their skills before securing deals with record labels that are equipped to support them.
“I do, however, have the gift to help, which is why I am working on a music school. This way, young artists can develop their talent before signing with a label that can truly nurture them,” she added.
