Bauchi, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA)-Healthcare Expansion Programme to enhance Nigeria’s healthcare sector. This initiative, aimed at retraining 120,000 frontline health workers, seeks to improve the well-being of Nigerians, drive economic development, and position the country as a healthcare hub in Africa.

The Healthcare Expansion Programme, one of the key components of the initiative, will establish ten world-class healthcare facilities across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

These facilities will specialize in oncology and diagnostics, building on the successes of previous NSIA projects such as the NSIA-Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Cancer Centre, the NSIA-Kano Diagnostic Centre, and the NSIA-Umuahia Diagnostic Centre.

Speaking at the launch in Bauchi State, where he was represented by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammed Ali Pate, President Tinubu highlighted the significance of these new projects.

He noted that the facilities will complement ongoing efforts to expand cancer treatment infrastructure and equipment at six federal teaching hospitals, ultimately aiming to reduce outbound medical tourism.

Following the completion of the first phase, Medserve, a subsidiary of NSIA, will oversee the operation of the largest network of oncology and diagnostic centers in West Africa.

The facilities are expected to train up to 500 clinicians over three years, while also enhancing clinical trial and research capabilities.

“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, and the NSIA for their vision and dedication in making this programme a reality,” Tinubu said. “This programme will serve as a blueprint for future healthcare infrastructure projects, propelling us towards our national healthcare goals: saving lives, reducing suffering, and ensuring health for all Nigerians.”

The second initiative focuses on retraining 120,000 frontline health workers. Tinubu emphasized that this effort is a personal priority for him, given his role as the African Union (AU) Champion for Human Resources for Health and Community Health Delivery Partnership.

“Health workers are the backbone of our healthcare system,” he stated. “By equipping them with the latest skills and knowledge, we ensure they are well-prepared to meet the evolving healthcare needs of our population.”

President Tinubu also stressed the importance of the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) in providing strategic direction for health investments, particularly in areas such as maternal and child health, disease prevention, and health system strengthening. He affirmed that basic healthcare is not only a fundamental human right but also a matter of national security.

During the event, Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for his commitment to improving the health sector, acknowledging the collaboration between the federal government and the state.

“We thank Mr. President for the giant strides he is making in the health sector. Even those of us in the opposition appreciate the work and collaboration with Mr. President’s team,” the governor remarked.

President Tinubu reiterated that his administration will continue to prioritize healthcare, enhance preventive measures, and invest in health education, with a focus on achieving universal health coverage for all Nigerians.
