88-Year-Old Saudi Arabian Monarch Receives Medical Care Amid Recurring Health Concerns
King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, 88, the ruler of Saudi Arabia, has been hospitalized and is set to undergo medical tests for lung inflammation, the Saudi royal court announced on Sunday, October 6, 2024.
The brief statement from the royal court read: “The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud – may Allah protect him – will undergo medical tests this evening, Sunday, 3 Rabi` al-Akhir 1446 AH, corresponding to October 6, 2024 AD, based on the recommendations of the Royal Clinics, due to pneumonia.”
This marks the second time this year that King Salman has received treatment for lung issues, with a previous hospitalization in May for a similar condition.
Although the King last chaired a cabinet meeting in August, a royal decree issued the same month allows cabinet meetings to proceed in the absence of both the king and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. In such cases, the eldest cabinet member from King Abdulaziz Al Saud’s descendants chairs the meeting.
King Salman, a key U.S. ally and leader of the world’s largest oil exporter, has reigned since 2015.
