Ondo, Nigeria – Sixteen people were tragically burnt to death in a horrific auto crash that occurred along the Ore-Ondo highway in Ajue community, Ondo State.
The accident, which involved a Toyota bus and a truck, took place around 8 p.m.
Eyewitnesses report that a dangerous overtaking maneuver by one of the drivers led to a head-on collision between the two vehicles, causing them to burst into flames. The fire reportedly spread rapidly, with the victims burnt beyond recognition. It is suspected that one of the vehicles may have had fuel stored inside, which contributed to the intensity of the blaze.
In addition to the fatalities, three individuals sustained serious injuries, while two others miraculously escaped unhurt. Rescue operations, which were led by the Ondo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ibitoye Samuel, concluded around 11 p.m.
Commander Ibitoye confirmed the incident and stated that preliminary investigations pointed to over-speeding and wrongful overtaking as the likely causes of the crash. He emphasized the importance of defensive driving techniques and urged motorists not to take unnecessary risks on the road.
