2024 World Igbo summit committee inaugurated in Asaba

In a significant move to promote cultural unity and cohesion, the Local Organizing Committee for the 2024 World Igbo Culture, Language, Heritage, and Tourism Summit has been officially inaugurated in Asaba, Delta State capital. The event aims to bring together Igbo-speaking people from around the world to foster a shared cultural identity and collective consciousness.

At the inauguration ceremony, former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, who chaired the occasion, emphasized the importance of integrating technology with cultural heritage to promote unity, mutual understanding, and respect among the community. He also highlighted the significance of the summit in shaping a shared cultural identity and promoting existential living.

Mrs. Chika Ibeneme, represented by Mrs. Ijeoma Igboanusi, a former Chief of Staff to the Imo State governor, commended the Igbo Unity Initiative and congratulated Delta State for hosting the event aimed at uniting all Igbo cultures. She praised the exceptional qualities of the Igbo people in business, intelligence, strength, and dedication to development.

The LOC Chairman, Mr. Patrick Nwanze, stated that this year’s summit would be a first-of-its-kind event, showcasing over 1,000 cultures of Igbos in different units. He noted that the gathering of diverse cultures and languages would play a significant role in enhancing national cohesion and integration, which are highly valued in Igbo culture.

Professor Adaobi Ugbomeh, Secretary of the LOC and a Don at the University of Port Harcourt, expressed her appreciation for being part of the committee. She emphasized that the ultimate goal is to showcase the unity of the Igbo language and culture despite its diverse dialects. According to her, while dialects may vary, the Igbo people are one entity, likening their diversity to different dialects.

The summit is scheduled to take place in November 2024 and aims to attract global attention and participation. It is expected to foster a deeper understanding and recognition of Igbo unity by dispelling misconceptions and ignorance that have led some to argue against Igbo unity.

The event is expected to be a resounding success, promoting cultural heritage and tourism while strengthening national cohesion and integration.
