Efforts to track and return the remaining inmates are ongoing.
Maiduguri, Nigeria – The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed that 281 inmates are missing following a flood that hit the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The incident occurred after the facility’s walls were breached by heavy flooding, resulting in the evacuation of inmates.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the NCoS spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, it was revealed that seven of the escaped inmates had already been recaptured and returned to custody. Abubakar explained that the flood caused significant damage to both the custodial centre and staff quarters.
“Upon the evacuation of inmates by officers of the service with support from sister security agencies to a safe and secure facility, 281 inmates were observed to be missing,” Abubakar said.
He added that the service has the biometric details of all the missing inmates, which have been made public to aid in their recapture. Security efforts, both overt and covert, are being coordinated with other agencies to locate the escapees.
“The public is assured that the incident does not pose any threat to public safety,” Abubakar noted.
Efforts to track and return the remaining inmates are ongoing.
