Umuahia, Nigeria – The First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, has donated N10 million to support cancer patients in the state. The donation was made during the 2024 World Cancer Day celebration held in Umuahia, aimed at assisting underprivileged patients in managing their treatment costs and alleviating their suffering.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Otti highlighted the devastating financial impact of cancer treatment on patients and their families, noting the need for concerted efforts in combating the disease.
“We understand the financial strain that cancer treatment can place on individuals and their families. That is why, as a symbol of our commitment, I am presenting a donation of N10 million in the form of bank cheques to some identified underprivileged patients today,” she said.
The First Lady emphasized the urgency of addressing the rising cancer rates in Nigeria, pointing out that early detection and prevention are critical in reversing the trend.
“Across Nigeria, it is estimated that nearly 28,000 cases of breast cancer and 14,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed every year. Among men, the incidence of prostate and colon cancer is alarmingly high. Abia State is not immune to this sobering trend. Despite strides in healthcare, we are witnessing an increase in cancer cases,” she stated.
Mrs. Otti urged families, communities, and stakeholders to unite in the fight against the disease, calling for stronger collaborations to prevent and combat cancer effectively.
Also speaking at the event, the Abia State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, described the occasion as a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to combat cancer.
“Today marks a milestone in the long-drawn fight against cancer, a relentless and ageless enemy of humanity,” he remarked.
The World Cancer Day celebration in Abia State served as a platform to underscore the importance of early detection, prevention, and collective action in addressing the growing cancer burden in the state and across Nigeria.
