Genocide Accusations: Former Rwandan Doctor Eugene Rwamucyo Faces Justice Decades After Massacre
A former Rwandan doctor, Eugene Rwamucyo, 65, is on trial in France for his alleged involvement in the 1994 genocide that led to the deaths of around 800,000 people, mostly Tutsis. Prosecutors accuse him of aiding anti-Tutsi propaganda, participating in mass murder, and attempting to cover up the atrocities by burying bodies in mass graves.
Rwamucyo, who fled to France after the genocide and practiced medicine there and in Belgium, is charged with genocide, complicity in genocide, crimes against humanity, and conspiracy. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment.
The trial is the eighth in France related to the Rwandan genocide. Witnesses claim Rwamucyo helped the genocidal government and participated in the execution of wounded Tutsis. However, his defense argues that his actions were driven by a need to prevent a health crisis, and that the charges are politically motivated.
Rwamucyo was arrested in 2010 following an international warrant from Rwanda. His trial, which features testimony from around 60 witnesses, is expected to last until October 29.
In a similar case, another former doctor, Sosthene Munyemana, was sentenced to 24 years in prison by a French court in December 2023 for his role in the genocide.
