ECOWAS Stakeholders to Convene in Nigeria for Security Dialogue
Akwa Ibom, Nigeria – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is set to host a high-level conference in Nigeria, aimed at addressing the security challenges hindering farming and agricultural production in the region. The event, scheduled to take place from October 6th to 11th, 2024, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, is expected to bring together key stakeholders from the food security and security sectors to discuss solutions to the region’s agricultural woes.
According to Felix Ihonre, Director-General of the ECOWAS Food and Cultural Festival, the event will provide a platform for governments and other key players to commit to high-level policies and initiatives aimed at promoting peace and development in the region. The festival, which will also showcase the culture and cuisine of ECOWAS member states, is expected to attract delegates from 16 member states, as well as international dignitaries and heads of state.
The Director-General emphasized that if governments can succeed in curbing violence in agricultural communities, farmers will be able to work without fear of harassment, leading to increased food production and availability. The festival’s theme, “Celebrating African Cultural Heritage for Peace and Development,” is seen as a timely reminder that development cannot thrive in an environment of conflict.
In addition to the high-level conference, the festival will feature a range of cultural events, including a golf tournament, train carnival, Miss ECOWAS Beauty Pageant, and other activities. The event is expected to promote tourism, sustainable development, cultural integration, poverty alleviation, youth employment, and women in agriculture.
The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) has expressed its support for the festival, citing its importance for promoting peace and development in the country. The OSGF has welcomed the Director-General of the ECOWAS Food and Cultural Festival, recognizing the value of the program for Nigeria.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has also endorsed the festival, stating that it aligns with President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The event is expected to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic development and cultural heritage.
