Namibia’s late president Hage Geingob, who died weeks after being diagnosed with cancer, has been buried on Sunday at the Heroes Acre in Namibia.

Geingob was announced dead at the hospital while serving his final term in office on February 4, 2024.

His burial witnessed thousands of mourners, including 25 heads of state and former presidents in attendance. The burial was held on the outskirts of Windhoek following 20 days of mourning.

Geingob, 82, was Namibia’s two-time prime minister and third president since its independence from minority-ruled South Africa in 1990.

Geingob was a veteran of the country’s independence struggle. He lived in exile for 27 years, spending time in Botswana, Zambia and the U.S. before returning to Namibia in 1989.

He held several senior positions in government and in his party, South West African People’s Organisation (SWAPO), including chairing the body that drafted Namibia’s constitution, considered a model of good governance and the rule of law.

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio lead a presidential delegation to the state funeral of the departed President of Namibia, Dr Hage Geingob, who died on February 4, 2024 at the age of 83 years.

In a statement on Saturday, media aide to Akpabio, Eseme Eyiboh, said the trip is at the instance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who had in a letter dated February 22, 2024, appointed Akpabio as his Special Envoy and Leader of the Nigerian delegation to the occasion holding in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia.
