Tripoli, Libya — Abdelhakim Al-Shalmani, President of the Libyan Football Federation, has announced his resignation during the Federation’s General Assembly meeting on Sunday.
In a statement, Al-Shalmani cited dissatisfaction with the state of Libyan sports, saying, “I do not want to be part of the failure in Libyan sports.”
Al-Shalmani acknowledged the difficulties faced by the Federation during his tenure, while expressing gratitude to all members of the General Assembly. “I thank all members of the General Assembly, and I forgive everyone from all segments of the sports sector,” he stated.
Reflecting on his legacy, Al-Shalmani maintained confidence in his contributions, highlighting his significant role in international football. “I have a history in the International, Arab, and African Federation, and no one can deny that,” he concluded.

In related news, the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, encountered major logistical challenges upon their arrival in Libya for their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. The team’s flight, originally headed for Benghazi, was unexpectedly diverted to Al Abraq International Airport on Sunday, leaving players and officials stranded for over 15 hours.
Al Abraq Airport, a smaller hub typically used for hajj operations, is located three hours from Benghazi, where the Super Eagles are scheduled to face the Libyan team on Tuesday. The situation has caused significant disruptions to the team’s preparation for the crucial second leg of the AFCON qualifier.
