In a dramatic turn of events, 119 inmates have fled the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, following severe damage caused by a rainstorm on Wednesday night.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Corrections Command Public Relations Officer, AS Duza, the heavy downpour devastated a portion of the facility’s perimeter fence, facilitating the mass escape.
Efforts are underway to recapture the escapees, with 10 already back in custody. Security agencies are collaborating to track down the remaining fugitives.
The Suleja Correctional Centre, a structure dating back to the colonial era, has long been identified as antiquated and vulnerable. However, ongoing efforts are aimed at modernizing correctional facilities across Nigeria, including the construction of new centers and the renovation of existing ones.
Residents reported that the rainstorm exacerbated ongoing repair work on the facility’s fence, leading to its collapse and the subsequent escape of inmates.
Despite the chaos, authorities have restored calm in Suleja town, while intensifying efforts to locate and apprehend the escaped prisoners.
This incident coincides with the Federal Government’s initiative to alleviate congestion in correctional facilities nationwide.
Plans to release over 4,000 inmates, particularly those unable to pay fines, have been announced by Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. A fund of N585 million has been allocated for this purpose.
