Nigerian Orthopaedic Surgeon Returns Home After 25 Years in the US, Vows to Transform Healthcare

A renowned Nigerian associate professor of orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Julius Oni, has made a surprising decision to relocate back to his home country after spending 25 years in the United States. In a video that has gone viral, Dr. Oni shared his reasons for leaving the US and returning to Nigeria, citing a desire to transform healthcare and provide quality orthopaedic care to Nigerians.

The 25-year veteran of Johns Hopkins University took a leave of absence from his position and sold his house and cars before relocating to Nigeria with his wife and children. Dr. Oni acknowledged that many may view his decision as unconventional, but he remains resolute in his conviction.

“I’m not delusional or crazy,” he said. “I’m just a man full of conviction, driven by a deep belief that Nigerian patients deserve access to world-class healthcare.”

Dr. Oni’s return to Nigeria is marked by the launch of DOC Medical Nigeria, a state-of-the-art facility focused on providing high-quality musculoskeletal care. The facility aims to bridge the gap in access to healthcare services in Nigeria, where many patients often travel abroad for treatment.

According to Dr. Oni, his efforts have already yielded positive results, with patients from Ghana and the UK seeking treatment at his facility. He has also performed surgeries and held free medical clinics in partnership with other organizations.

In addition to his work at DOC Medical Nigeria, Dr. Oni has consulted with patients outside Nigeria. His ultimate goal is to establish a comprehensive healthcare system that provides top-tier care to Nigerians, reducing the need for them to seek medical attention abroad.

Dr. Oni’s decision serves as a testament to his dedication to improving healthcare in Nigeria and his commitment to making a positive impact on his community.
