70-Year-Old Man Arrested for Alleged Murder Police of Inspector Over Marriage Dispute
The Niger State Police Command has apprehended Sabo Manigi, a 70-year-old resident of the Manigi community in Mashegu Local Government Area, for allegedly murdering Inspector Musa Nasiru on February 3. Following the incident, Manigi fled to Bode-Saadu in Kwara State.
Reports indicate that the motive for the crime stemmed from a love triangle involving Manigi’s son and a young woman who ultimately chose to marry the police inspector. An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, recounted that when the young woman was asked by her parents to choose a partner, she selected Nasiru. This decision reportedly caused Manigi’s son to faint, overwhelming him with despair over losing his intended bride.
In response to his son’s distress, Manigi confronted Nasiru, expressing his anger and grief over the situation. “He told Nasiru that he must kill him,” the witness stated, noting that many thought Manigi was joking. However, in a shocking turn of events, he allegedly brandished a knife and stabbed the officer. Nasiru was quickly taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Bida but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Following the stabbing, Manigi escaped to Kwara State. Nevertheless, the Niger State Police, diligent in their pursuit, traced and arrested him on February 25.
Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesman for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the arrest and indicated that the suspect has confessed to the crime. “The operatives of the Niger State Police Command have arrested a suspect, who has been on the run, Alhaji Sabo Manigi, 70, of Manigi, Mashegu LGA on February 25, 2025, after being tracked to Bode-Saadu,” Abiodun stated via WhatsApp.
He added that Manigi would face prosecution once investigations conclude, noting that Nasiru, who was attached to the Magistrate Court in Mashegu, was killed over a minor dispute. The police are currently continuing their inquiries into the case at the SCID Minna.
