Driver Slain, Chevron Employee Kidnapped in Eket, Akwa Ibom State
UYO – The police in Akwa Ibom State have reported a distressing incident in the Eket Local Government Area, where a driver was killed and Samuel Ekerenam, a worker for Chevron, was abducted.
Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, shared that the abduction took place on Saturday, November 23, around 5 PM at the Hephzibah Shopping Mall in Eket. She detailed that the armed assailants fired their weapons indiscriminately to intimidate bystanders, fatally shooting the victim’s driver and overpowering his police escort before successfully taking Ekerenam.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph Eribo, along with his tactical teams, has visited the crime scene, and significant efforts are underway to ensure the victim’s safe return,” John stated.
A family member, who requested anonymity, informed reporters that the abductors have not yet reached out to the family. They added, “We are still trying to determine the motive behind the kidnapping, whether it is ransom-related or something else entirely, since no communication has been made with us.”
The family source further revealed that the victim is not only a Chevron employee but also a pastor, noting that he had returned home from work earlier on the same day he was taken.
It is worth mentioning that Samuel Ekerenam’s wife, Mrs. Glory Ekerenam, was kidnapped in Eket on October 17, 2019, and held captive in a hideout in Ikot Ubo, within the Nsit Ubium Local Government Area.
