Retired Anglican Archbishop Godwin Okpala and Driver Released After 25 Days in Captivity
After spending nearly 25 days in captivity, retired Anglican Archbishop of the Niger Province and former Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Prof. Godwin Okpala, has regained his freedom along with his driver. The two went missing on December 7, 2024, while traveling to the Umuchu community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. They failed to reach their destination, sparking concerns among residents and local stakeholders.
Following their disappearance, the Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Ndubuisi Obi, issued a public prayer request, urging the community to pray for the safe return of Archbishop Okpala. As days passed without news, anxiety and tension grew within the state regarding their plight.
The developments surrounding their abduction were closely monitored until news of their release emerged early Thursday. A trustworthy source from the Diocese confirmed that the Archbishop and his driver had been freed, although the specifics of their release remain unclear, including whether a ransom was paid.
Archbishop Okpala himself shared the joyous news on his Facebook page, simply stating, “Praise the Lord!” His post was met with an outpouring of gratitude and relief from followers celebrating his safe return.
An official statement from the Church is anticipated, with a church representative expressing their joy over the Archbishop’s release, calling it a “heartfelt New Year’s gift” for both the Anglican Communion and the greater Anambra State community. Attempts to obtain a statement from the Anambra State Police Command spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, were unsuccessful, as messages and calls went unanswered.
Reactions of relief and joy have erupted across various social media platforms linked to the Anglican Communion following the Archbishop’s return.
