Abuja Light Rail to operate free for two months

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, announced that the Abuja Light Rail will be free to use for the first two months following its commissioning on Monday, May 27, 2024. This announcement was made during the ongoing Ministerial Sectoral Update, marking the first year of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, held at the Radio House in Abuja on Thursday.

Wike revealed that President Tinubu will officially inaugurate the Metro rail project for commercial use on Monday. He encouraged residents to start using the Metro rails from Tuesday, May 28, emphasizing that the initiative aims to facilitate easier commuting for the residents. He also mentioned that the President might extend the free train rides for up to six months.

In addition to the rail project, Wike disclosed that the FCT Administration plans to begin the construction of 10,000 affordable housing units, known as the Renewed Hope City, starting in 2025.

The event also featured briefings from the Minister of Youth Development, Jamilo Bio Ibrahim, and the Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Ahmed Alkali.
