Abuja Records 10 Deaths in Measles Outbreak, Residents Urged to Vaccinate

A devastating measles outbreak has struck the Damangaza community in Lokogoma district of Abuja, resulting in the loss of at least 10 children. The community has been plagued by a shortage of access to healthcare services, which has led to a surge in preventable diseases.

According to sources, the community head, James Budebo, announced the tragic news during a health outreach program organized by the Damangaza Primary Healthcare (PHC) and Vaccine Network for Disease Control (VNDC), a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving healthcare in underserved communities. The outbreak comes at a critical time as Nigeria battles with a cholera epidemic.

Budebo highlighted the challenges faced by the community in accepting vaccines, citing misconceptions and lack of information as major obstacles. He emphasized the importance of vaccination in preventing measles and its severe complications.

Health workers at the PHC have reported that the measles outbreak has compounded the community’s existing challenges, with many residents struggling to access quality healthcare services. A local health worker, Longtang Shawen, urged residents to take advantage of vaccination programs to protect their children from preventable diseases.

The VNDC CEO, Chika Offor, stressed the importance of promoting vaccine accessibility and accurate information to address community concerns and misconceptions. She emphasized the organization’s commitment to supporting community dialogue on vaccination and public health measures.

The tragic loss of young lives has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the urgent need for improved healthcare infrastructure and access to essential medical services. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of neglecting public health measures and the importance of prioritizing vaccination programs.
