Anambra Launches Manhunt for Cult-Related Killers

Anambra State Government Launches Manhunt for Cultists Following Deadly Attack at New Yam Festival

The Anambra State Government has pledged to pursue those responsible for the brutal cult-related killings that took place in the Nibo community of Awka South Local Government Area on Sunday. The violent incident, linked to hoodlums believed to be cult members, left at least 13 people dead during the community’s New Yam festival, known locally as the ‘Nibo onwa asaa’ festival.

The chaos erupted when assailants, arriving in a Lexus 300 jeep, opened fire on festival-goers near the Oye Nwochichi Market and Nibo Old Maternity, killing eight individuals instantly. The attackers then moved to another location, where additional casualties were reported.

In a press release issued on Monday, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, confirmed the state government’s awareness of the tragic event. He stated that measures are already in motion to locate and apprehend those involved in the killings.

“The Anambra State Government is aware of the deaths that resulted from alleged cult-related actions in Nibo, Awka South LG, on Sunday, October 20, 2024,” the statement said.

Mefor described the killings as part of a troubling trend of violent crimes associated with cult groups, reiterating the state government’s commitment to eradicating such violence. He extended condolences to the families of the victims and assured that the administration would thoroughly investigate the incident to bring the culprits to justice.

To aid in the hunt for the attackers, Mefor called on members of the public to provide any relevant information that could facilitate arrests, guaranteeing confidentiality and a reward for useful tips.

He also encouraged law-abiding citizens to continue their daily activities without fear while the state collaborates with security agencies to manage the situation. Mefor mentioned that hotlines would soon be made available for the public to report information related to the incident and similar occurrences.
