Anglican Bishop, Family Kidnapped in Ondo State; Ransom Set at N75 Million
In a distressing incident reported in the Akoko North-East local government area of Ondo State, the Anglican bishop, Rev. Canon Olowolagba, along with his wife and two children, were abducted along the Iboropa road. Sources revealed that the kidnappers have reached out to the family and church officials, demanding a staggering ransom of N75 million for their safe return.
According to details provided by the Rt. Rev. Babajide Bada, the Bishop of Akoko Anglican Diocese, the family was en route from Ipesi and passing through Isua Akoko when they were taken captive. It wasn’t until the following morning that concerns arose from church members regarding their whereabouts, as the family did not arrive at their destination in Ikaram.
Bishop Bada highlighted the distressing situation, mentioning that the couple’s daughter, a student at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, was among those kidnapped, along with a nine-year-old girl. Initially, the kidnappers demanded an exorbitant N75 million ransom, but after negotiations, the amount was allegedly reduced to N10 million. However, once the family began to gather funds, the ransom demand was raised again to N15 million, and eventually back to the original N75 million figure.
In response to the abduction, local authorities have been alerted, including the state security agency known as Amotekun. Bishop Bada reported that Amotekun, along with hunters and the police, have commenced efforts to locate and ensure the safe return of the victims. “Amotekun is actively involved,” he confirmed, “as we have reported the incident to their office in Akure, and they are taking necessary actions.”
Sheikh Basiru Aminu, chairman of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Akoko North-West Local Government, has urged community members and religious leaders to offer prayers for the safe release of the kidnapped family.
Funmi Odunlami, the spokesperson for the state police command, stated that the incident had not been officially reported at any police station. However, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, the commander of the state Amotekun Corps, corroborated the abduction and assured that his team is collaborating with other security forces to facilitate the swift and safe release of the victims.
